Freshies Intake 2018

The annual intake of new skaters, referees and officials has started!

Freshie intake for Albany Roller Derby League with a Registration night on April 9th –  6 pm at The Track and training commencing April 30th.

People of all abilities are welcome to join with ARDL coaches experienced in teaching even the most ‘wall clinging’ people to skate.  The new poster campaign launched by the league focuses on all the words women hear about why they cannot or should not participate in sports.  ARDL is actively pushing this narrative to the side, in fact, smashing it to the ground.  We believe that women can do anything they wish to do and contact sports like Roller Derby are no exception.

New skaters of all genders are welcome to join the Freshie group for 2018.  The coaches teach basic roller derby skills with each week building on skills, eventually getting skaters to passing WFTDA Minimumum Skill requirements.  From here players join in the Rec League games and can progress to the Travel Team ‘Great Southern Breakers’ for State and Interstate travel games.

ARDL coach Splats said “We have seen many people join the league and start their skating journey clinging to the wall and unable to stand up, then we see an amazing transformation happen.  Not only in skating skills but in the whole person with their body confidence and determination” The training is specifically designed to build peoples strength and skills in a gradual way and the league has a dedicated Injury Prevention plan to help reduce injuries common in sports.  All ARDL coaches have a minimum Level 1 Roller Derby Coaching Accreditation from Skate Victoria.  The league is also a proud Act-Belong-Commit Partner and Good Sports Level 3 Club.

The registration night held on April 9 will coincide with a regular training night so new skaters have a chance to see a regular training session.  There is also time to meet other new people in the intake as well as ask questions of existing skaters.

People who already have basic skating skills who may be interested in less contact and less training times can enter the  Referees Crew.  The Ref Crew will have a Registration night on April 12  at 7 pm it is a requirement that you have basic skills on either blades or quad skates.  Referees help to keep players safe and learn a set of hand, whistle and verbal cues like in other sports.  ARDL is able to give all new Referees training through the Skate Victoria Referee Accreditation program.

People are encouraged to register online here as well as join in the Learn to Skate classes occurring on Saturdays 10-11 leading up to Freshies Intake.

People unable to attend the night but keen to sign up are able to email the league for information
